Standards Based Report Cards
During the 2015-16 school year K-5 students at Farmington Central Elementary School will be issued a Standards Based Report Card. This report card will give parents a clearer understanding of what their child(ren) are learning. The Standards used in the creation of the report card were derived from Illinois New Learning Standards for ELA/Math and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
Do all of the grade levels use SBRCs? No. At this time we are only focused on using them at the elementary levels. After K-5 SBRCs are implemented it is hoped that it can be expanded to 6-8th grades. There are some high schools that have moved to using SBRCs but they also give letter grades because of the significance that GPAs have on college admissions, athletic scholarships, and scholarships in general.
Why are science and social studies not listed? The state of Illinois just adopted new science standards and we are in the process of incorporating their content into our K reading curriculum. District 265 recognizes the importance of social studies and science, yet have decided that K-2 instructional time will be focused on reading, writing, and math. Topics of social studies and science are embedded into the reading curriculum.
Can I convert the rubric scores into letter grades? School administrators are aware that this is a major shift for students and parents. We believe that the information the SBRC will give families more information specific to what has been learned – but it is a huge shift. In order to support the shift, for at least one year students will receive the traditional report card (last year’s format) AND the SBRC.
If there are no letter grades given, what determines whether a child is passed or retained? The decision to pass has always been connected to the child’s readiness for the next grade level’s academic requirements. Passing performance in the current grade has historically been viewed as meeting that minimum standard. Retention will always be a serious decision. Using a SBRC will inform teachers, students and parents/guardians about specific areas of concern.
Do the performance descriptors on the report card correlate with letter grades? No, the following performance descriptors are used to indicate a student’s progress in meeting academic learning standards:
MASTERED The student consistently demonstrates an understanding and application of skills and concepts beyond what was taught in class. The student may benefit from work that is differentiated or of greater rigor. The student is consistently on target for meeting established end-of-year, grade level learning objective.
PROGRESSING The student demonstrates partial understanding and application of skills and concepts taught in class. The student may require more exposure or practice to fully demonstrate consistent understanding and application. A mark of approaching is expected and often occurs when a new concept or skill is introduced.
AREA OF CONCERN The student consistently requires assistance to demonstrate understanding and/or application of skills and concepts taught in class. The student may benefit from work that is adapted or from differentiated instruction in order to demonstrate better understanding or application of skills and concepts.
NOT ASSESSED The skill or knowledge is not expected from a kindergartner at this point in the school year. It will be assessed later in the school year.

Grades are given for each subject area (reading, math, PE, music, writing, etc)
Subject areas are sub-divided into a list of knowledge and skills created from the Illinois Learning Standards. Students receive a separate mark for each skill.
Measures how well your child does in comparisons to their classmates.
Measures how well your child is doing in relation to the grade-level standards. This will give you a deeper understanding of your child’s strengths and weaknesses.
We appreciate that Farmington parents and guardians want to help their child(ren) do their best and it is our hope that having specifics related to your child’s strengths and concerns will enable you to focus your efforts.
Behaviors were noted but in general terms and often not noted at all.
Behaviors are being aligned to our new initiative THE LEADER IN ME. This building-wide program focuses on teaching and reinforcing 21st century life skills.
Leader in MeSchools focus on teaching students the leadership principles and life skills found in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which provide a direct learning path to these skills. The Private Victory habits teach personal productivity, responsibility, self-direction, and initiative. The Public Victory habits teach problem solving, collaboration, effective communication, and cross-cultural skills. Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw, teaches self-renewal in areas such as the physical, mental, and social/emotional.
HOW DOES A STANDARDS -BASED REPORT CARD HELP PARENTS? Standards-based report cards provide detailed information about how a student is doing in each subject. In addition, they:
- Promote more meaningful conversations at parent/teacher conferences
- Reflect grade level standards and expectations so parents gain a complete understanding of student progress
- Enable teachers and parents to work together to ensure student success
